On 24th June last year I awoke suddenly to my wife screaming: “Oh no!” at the top of her voice. I knew immediately what happened. The unbelievable had taken place, the Referendum result was “Leave” by 52% to 48%.

We were staying in Bari in Puglia in Southern Italy visiting our daughter who, unlike her father, speaks several European languages. She was living in Italy and regards herself as a European citizen. Despite my lack of language skills so do I. All this, of course, was now under threat.
